BOSTON - The cheers for David Ortiz were those of a pleading nature, but the roaring for Tim Wakefield was well-earned.
On another hitless night for Ortiz, Boston's slump-ridden designated hitter, Wakefield delivered eight stellar innings of five-hit ball Tuesday night, and the Red Sox handed Toronto a 2-1 setback at Fenway Park.
The Blue Jays came to Boston with a .289 average, best in the American League, and 3½-game lead in the American League East. That meant nothing against Wakefield (5-2), who induced eight infield popups, three of which were caught by catcher George Kottaras.
