Mariners keen on Red Sox

SEATTLE - There’s something about the Red Sox [team stats] that intrigues the Seattle Mariners.

As the two teams prepared to play the middle game of their series last night, the Sox had three people in their dugout who had interviewed for the position of Mariners manager - and a fourth who politely declined an invitation.

Meanwhile, back in Boston, a member of the Sox baseball operations staff was sought last winter when the Mariners were looking for a new general manager.

“I can’t get anyone to leave there,” joked Seattle president and chief operating officer Chuck Armstrong.

While Terry Francona was named manager of the Red Sox after the 2003 season, he interviewed with Seattle a year earlier. It was, in fact, during his stay in Seattle that Francona suffered complications from an earlier knee surgery that resulted in a hospitalization and nearly led to an amputation.
