BOSTON -- Maybe they should start calling him Thunder Bay. In the eighth inning against the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday night, Jason Bay gave Boston Red Sox fans more reason to forget Manny Ramirez when he blasted a double off the wall with his pink bat for the winning run in a 4-3 victory.
"He's always in the middle of everything," manager Terry Francona said of Bay's latest performance, this one on Breast Cancer Awareness Day (thus, the pink bat). "It's always when we need it."
The unassuming left fielder from the small British Columbia town of Trail, best known for hockey (NHL veteran Ray Ferraro used to babysit him), has become the image of class and clutch at the plate. Bay is batting .378 with runners in scoring position. Eight of his nine home runs have come with runners on base.
